Valley Quarter Horse Association - About Us

Our History

Valley Quarter Horse Association was created with the intention of promoting the Quarter Horse in Southern California.

It was VQHA's goal to:  1.  Increase the number of shows in Southern California and 2. Break out halter classes typically offered as “3 and under” and “4 and older”.  VQHA began holding their own shows which broke out those halter classes as well as weanling futurities.

We also created a year end awards program where participants could earn points at other shows from Santa Barbara and Bakersfield south.  The requirement for show approval was offering of halter classes for weanlings, yearlings and 2-year-olds.

VQHA routinely sponsored a junior champion colt and filly at approved shows. Due to the many requests for show approval, a limit of 30 shows was set annually.

VQHA also created a Breeders Award program where Quarter Horse stallion owners and breeders had the ability to participate in special, Breeders Award Futurities at the September "Show for the Gold".

In 2005, the Breeders Award program was discontinued, but VQHA continues forward.  Our never ending goal of promoting the Quarter Horse in Southern California drives us forward.
